This week we try trampoline fitness – the best way to bounce yourself fit.

 

Over the past ten years, trampolines seem to have sprang up everywhere.

From your next-door neighbours garden to the Olympic Games, everybody is bouncing.

But how many of those using trampolines regularly are aware of the fitness benefits behind it? And what if they were encouraged to not just pop up and down, trying and failing with the occasional front flip, but to use it as their way of working out?

That’s exactly what people across the country are beginning to tap into.

“There’s nothing better than jumping and feeling the wind hitting you and feeling as light as a feather whilst getting a great workout!” said Cassandra, fitness instructor at Jump Nation in Manchester.

“You’ll obviously feel the workout in your muscles but you have the benefit of not putting pressure through your joints which can impact how a lot of people choose to exercise, what works for them or what their bodies can physically achieve.

“The workout is fully rounded, you work your whole body from head to toe as well as hitting your cardiovascular and muscular needs.”

The list of benefits attributed to completing on your workouts on trampolines is impressive: full-body benefits with a focus on core strength, increases in cardiovascular and muscular fitness, increased metabolism, a reduction of impact on joints that has been certified by NASA.

Of course, reading the facts doesn’t give you a real impression of what a sport is actually like. So we sent our Andy Donley down to Jump Nation to try out a fitness class for himself…

 

“It’s hard – I failed miserably”

When I turned up to JumpNation, I didn’t know exactly what to expect, but it was only last month I tried my hand at pole dancing, surely trampolining was a doddle in comparison?

How very wrong I was.

Even when I was mucking around on the trampolines before the fitness class started, I was surprised at how hard it was to coordinate. And when I was encouraged to try a few tricks, I admit I failed miserably.

But I still wasn’t prepared for how taxing a workout the trampoline fitness class was going to be.

I’m ashamed to say I don’t exercise as much as I should. That means that my wardrobe of practical clothing for such occasions is a touch sparse. And that’s why I turned up in tight-fitting jeans.

Trying to complete aerial splits in jeans isn’t easy, so learn from my mistakes and dress practically!

In a 50 minute session, my body received the most thorough going over of its adult life. And I absolutely loved it.

It’s a cardio workout and muscle toner at the same time – with the added benefit that your joints aren’t placed under strain at all.

It’s also a great deal of fun. Both because for anybody with a childish streak trampolines are always exciting, and due to the high-tempo, constantly changing nature of the workout.

I’d recommend it to anybody looking for a new form of exercise – I even went back for a second attempt the following week. Only this time I wasn’t wearing jeans…
