Hoops Hangouts Sophie

As a young start-up company, we know how important it is that we offer you something different. And while we believe that our app is a unique resource for organising, discovering and participating in sport, we want to do something more. So, in a new series of blog posts, we’re asking the team to talk about Hoops Connect and their careers.

This week we’re delighted to welcome Sophie Binder, who is joining the team as our new Social Media Ninja!

“This is my passion”

In my previous two roles I worked closely with the marketing teams, and I did a creative degree at university as well, in film production with creative content.

So I’ve always been involved in this kind of work, and that’s helped me to realise that social media is what I love and this is where my passion lies.

Everybody is on social media. We live in a world where everything is on demand, and social media fits into that.

Everything is constantly changing, but a lot of people now don’t go to news outlets to find out what’s going on in the world, they just use social media.

It crosses demographics – your grandma and your 12-year-old niece may be looking at the same post on Facebook or Twitter.

And those platforms are constantly expanding and reaching new people.

“Sport is so important socially”

I’ve played sport all my life!

My dad was a GB cyclist, he raced in the Tour de France and Vuelta a España. He gave me that competitive edge, and my brother did a lot of sport as well.

So I started off playing football, but I wasn’t very good. Then I found hockey and loved it! I still play and coach now – nothing beats the feeling of playing sport.

It’s so important socially, in building social skills and leadership skills. And its so crucial people stay active and healthy, especially as less people are doing that these days.

For younger people, and especially children, it’s so useful for them to learn those skills as early as possible. Even the little things like having to be at training at a certain time teaches them responsibility.

And I think anybody who has played sport will still have friends who they met playing as kids – you don’t forget those memories.

“Hoops Connect can really change the sports industry”

There is so much going on in sport at the minute, but there’s nothing out there to show people what, when and where – not until Hoops Connect came along at least!

People might want to look for events in their area, find out what other people are doing or just organise something themselves – those three things are streamlined on the app, which I think is great and can really make a difference to people’s lives.

And if people are using the app, then they can find new sports and open themselves to new experiences.

The fact that it is just there on your phone, it’s so accessible but has so much on it, it has the potential to be massive and to really change the sports industry.
