Hoops Hangouts Jonas getting people into sport

As a young start-up company, we know how important it is that we offer you something different. And while we believe that our app is a unique resource for organising, discovering and participating in sport, we want to do something more. So, in a new series of blog posts, we’re asking the team to talk about Hoops and their careers.

This week founder Jonas Urbonas tells us about the importance of sport – and why he’s excited about the potential for Hoops to get Britain active!

Since a very young age I was really into sport, not just basketball but health and fitness in general.

I feel it’s very important for your self-development, and it works not only physically but mentally as well.

Sport helps you build mental toughness, it helps you to break boundaries and to get over things like self-doubt, and helps you to see your potential, to see how far you can go and how far you can push yourself.

For me, I played basketball because that was the sport that I really enjoyed.

Through that I came up with the idea behind the app – as I’ve said in Hoops Hangouts before, the idea was for an app to solve problems like finding players, places etc.

But beyond that, building a sport and fitness related app gives me a sense of wellbeing, because I feel like I’m contributing to society and helping people get healthier and to get into sport.

“We want to do it right”

It’s been a few years now where people have really started focussing on fitness and health.

We’ve got people using Fitbits, more people going to the gym and doing yoga, more people concentrating on eating healthily.

People are starting to really look into how to live a healthy life.

But from the discovery point of view, getting into sport, that particular niche in the sports technology industry is still very new.

We want to be the ones that fill that space and provide the value that people deserve. We want to do it right.

“Just sign up and see what’s happening near you”

Most people will have a sport that they are interested in.

What we’re doing is we’re helping you see what’s going on around you, no matter what sport you may be into.

When you sign up you tell us what sports you are interested in, and we’ll show you what events there are near you – all you need to do is turn up and try it out.

And we’re looking into a way that will help people to discover random sports as well, that will force you to step out of comfort zone and try something new.

We want to provide a platform that is suitable for everybody – for people who play sport every week, and for people who have never played sport in their life.

Everybody knows about football, but we’ve got some new pioneering sports lined up for the app. People wouldn’t know how to find them on the internet, they’ve never heard of them. With the app you just log on and see what’s going on.

You have the choice, we just give you the platform.
