Brigita in Barcelona

Here at Hoops we’re committed to bringing you the most informative and motivational content possible – after all, we want you to love sport as much as we do! But we don’t know everything. So we’re going to be enlisting the help of regular columnists to help us fill in the gaps.

Back in March, Hoops ambassador Brigita Bonas told us about her experiences competing in bikini fitness. Here, she updates us on a hobby that is taking her around Europe…

To tell you the truth, I didn’t expect to qualify for Arnold Classic Europe 2017.

In fact, even after in the summer I wasn’t actually planning to go because I’ve been so busy. I’ve just graduated with a Masters in Architecture and started my dream job here in Manchester.

Plus this was my first time competing outside the UK. And it was Arnold Schwarzenegger’s competition to boot!

But, during a break in my home country Lithuania I had some time to think properly about it and decided that even if I’d be as busy as hell, I really believed I could squeeze the competition in. All my reasons not to just sounded like excuses.

So suddenly I had to do my very best to prepare for this competition in time. I had to plan everything really really thoroughly – I had no spare time for myself, girly treats or lazy weekends.

But it was worth it for the experience!

“In the last few weeks I’m a machine”

Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t moody, unhappy and starving – I was happy, because it all works out if you know how to manage your time!

But then came the real challenge. You can imagine how frustrating it is to wait and get ready abroad – find a gym; take loads of extra duvets and pillow cases not to ruin hotel with tan; and most importantly you can’t enjoy the city you’re in to the fullest because of diet, water retention and overall tiredness.

What makes things more difficult is I’m pescatarian when preparing for a comp and vegetarian out of season.

Prep food is usually quite boring because I tend not to care too much about the taste just the composition of the food, usually just sea food, some carbs and a variety of cooked veggies!

After you get your precious food ready, you take it with you – EVERYWHERE. You eat in the most random places and at random times, just because you need to.

In the last few weeks I’m a machine.

“It’s great to see the other girls – a fascinating view”

Finally, there I was in Barcelona queuing in a line of 1500 athletes.

Registration took all day long – you actually need to take loads of food and water to stay there up all day queuing.

On the day I was up from 5am to get ready. I did everything myself – tan, make up, hair, even the bikini was done by me. Next thing I knew I was up on the stage, which passed like a blink of an eye.

Fortunately I have no stage fright whatsoever.  This is the time to enjoy it to the fullest, to show off all your hard work and dedication.

It was great to appreciate the shapes of other girls from all over Europe, a fascinating view!

It’s important to realise that around 40 girls take to the stage at the same time, each one trying to catch the eye of the judges, some with years of experience.

It was really hard with this bunch of girls going around on the stage, trying to get to the front and show off properly their physique.

I felt that the winners here had one important quality – they looked as they belonged there on the big stage. You have to convince by that not just spectators and judges but yourself.

“My hunger for thrill is growing”

All sweaty because of posing I came down from the stage and thought “how come I always put myself into these random situations!?”.

I never regret it though, because I enjoy it.

Where’s my next stop? To be honest, my hunger for thrill is growing every time, I need something more to get that special feeling of excitement.

Therefore, international competitions are something I’ll try to keep up with and broaden my experience.
